It was sad news to hear that artist / designer David Band passed away from cancer earlier this year. We collaborated on this exhibition with him at Jan Murphy Gallery in Brisbane, Australia in 2006. His work will continue to inspire us.

Matthew in Cambodia

One week after we closed our screen printing studio Matthew was invited to Cambodia to teach sustainable design in remote villages. He couldn't find a reason to say no so literally a week later he found himself in a hot and sweaty tin shed in the middle of a rice field on the remote Cambodian / Vietnamese border. He worked with young men being trained to make bamboo furniture and arranged for textile weavers to learn how to naturally dye cotton using flowers and tree bark found locally in the villages.

I absolutely love the 4 that I own and they are used every day. They really are my most treasured thing that I own. Zaishu Grande Finale

For the last 6 years over 1000 artists in 22 countries have been busy painting, printing, sticking, doodling and generally adding their bit of creativity to the Zaishu art project. Next week we have our Grand Finale at the Australian Centre of Contemporary Art where we first launched the project back in 2004.

For our special send off we have the last 8 individually painted Zaishu seats by some of Australia's most talked about illustrators and artists. Amber Wallis, Beci Orpin, Rebecca Wetzler Oslo Davis, Tin&Ed, Karl Maier, Elke Kramer and Tai Snaith. And, there’s one more Zaishu being made by Polly Dedman which will be the first prize for the raffle being drawn at the end of the night.

100% of sales will be donated to Shebeen, Australia's first non-profit bar as part of their Pin Up Your Doodle fund raising art auction, run by Ben Clark of Sotherby's Australia.

The new Watsons Bay Library in Sydney has 12 splendidly hand painted Zaishu seats for children's story time. 24 talented local artists interpreted the theme 'What Watsons Bay means to them' by painting boats, plants, marine life and the historic lighthouse. Local residents love the way functional design and public art have blended to create a reading space that relates to the local community and surroundings. Special thanks to Jo Jansen from Woollahra Council for organising the project, Miroma Bush Care Volunteers, Rogoff Art Studio, Vaucluse Public School and all of the artists.

Clean Lines

As part of the State of Design program the Mercator Studios at the Abbotsford Convent are staging a special collaborative exhibition titled Clean Lines responding to the idea of adaptive re-use and referencing the building’s history as an industrial laundry. We have teamed up with Cone11 the ceramic design studio downstairs to create a limited edition of table settings.

Follow the clothes line leading from the entrance of the precinct through each studio to discover a diverse range of works including jewellery, glass, ceramics, furniture, lighting, printmaking and painting. While visiting the exhibitions, visitors will have the opportunity to meet the designers, learn about the development of the studios, and purchase work direct from the makers themselves.

We have made only 25 of these hand printed slot together Mini Gasket seats to be available before Christmas. Made ethically and sustainably in Australia the print design is inspired by vintage automotive garage signs we discovered during road trips across the country. It is made from flat pack plywood and wrapped in a reusable cloth bag easily assembled without tools in a couple of minutes. The Mini Gasket is available online or from our new shop at the Convent.

Painting in India

Here is a clip from our visit to India. We set up a temporary art studio in Samparc Children's village near Mumbai. For one month local artists and school children participated in hand painting traditional artwork onto panels that were later laser cut into Zaishu seats/tables. These have all sold out with proceeds from sales going directly to support the artists and Samparc children's village. Filming and editing Mike Crowhurst.
